Located in St. Cloud, Florida, Russell Holmes started out taking photos when his father bought him a used Pentax K1000 in 1980. This camera didn't have auto anything requiring Russ to learn the skills of Photography. He spent quite a bit of time in the library studying books on the various subjects he was interested in. Russ' father Bernard Holmes, a WWII vet, had a solid understanding of the art and was very helpful when Russ had questions.
Russ used the Pentax K1000 for about 22 years picking up lenses and other pieces to complete his setup during his travels while spending 9 years in the Navy as an Electronics Technician. In 1997, Russell, his wife, and two children moved back to St. Cloud located in Osceola County, Florida. While working for the City of St. Cloud as an audio visual technician and webmaster, Russ was learning more and more about technology and how to use computers to do the work that would normally have been done in a darkroom. He then decided to let his photography catch up with the new age. It was difficult to give up on the manual camera he had been shooting for over 20 years, but Russ decided to slide in to the digital realm and purchased an Olympus 1.3 Mega Pixel camera. This camera gave him the ability to learn more about Digital Photo Editing. His major problem with the non-pro "Point and Shoot" cameras where the lack of low light shooting ability and "shutter-lag".
Russ now has two Canon 30Ds cameras and a 40D camera, numerous professional lenses, and professional lighting. The Digital Age has opened up many opportunities for photographers. Many things that would normally be done in a darkroom with smelly chemicals can be done in the computer with the right software and skills. His images have won him awards and his work has been published in local news papers and ads.
He loves to capture memories through his images. Russ loves to photograph anything from macro photography, Individuals, Engagements, to Weddings and Events. "I like to capture images from different perspectives and angles. It is fun to watch someone look at one of my images and get pulled into the feeling and emotions. If I can evoke an emotion in the viewer, I've accomplished my goal."
Russell loves to talk to the subjects to be photographed to get a feel for their personality and hopefully be able to show that through the images he takes. "I like to take a few shots just to get them used to my camera. This tends to make all involved more comfortable and relaxed which can also be seen in the final image." He enjoys keeping his setup portable so that he can go on location if needed and shoot his subjects in the comfort of their own homes.
This is the world as seen through my eyes via my camera and lens.
Russell has a background in electronics, broadcast, and photography.
